New Voice Considers All Energy Options

30, October 2006

The Australian Environment Foundation (AEF) supports the investigation of nuclear energy options.  Chairman of the Foundation, Don Burke said, “Nuclear energy has much to offer our environment and it is good that the Government is prepared to look into the details of this option.”

“Nuclear energy is just one of the many options that should be considered for our future power generation to ensure the best outcomes for people and our environment,” he said.

“In addition to nuclear, we have an abundance of options to consider in the energy debate from managed supplies of coal, gas and hydro, new developments in biofuel and untapped wind and solar sources, each involving a different capital, social and environmental contribution.”

“At a technical level, there is a need to match energy supply with demand. That is why it is also important to assess the safety and security of nuclear power. The costs and most efficient uses of alternative energy sources are also an important consideration”, explained Don Burke.

The AEF is committed to ensuring that the energy debate is conducted on the basis of facts and scientific and technical analysis.

“We welcome the opportunity to actively contribute to the debate on all energy options”, concluded Don Burke.
