Alex Stuart was born in Canberra, grew up in Asia, and went to high school in Victoria. He graduated in economics and political science at the University of Melbourne and pursued graduate studies in the UK and US. After starting a business career overseas, Alex was active in international trade in beef and pork products, and later managed the American food manufacturing subsidiary of Dalgety & Co. He was appointed Regional Director of the Americas for Austrade and has subsequently been active in new ventures and technology-based small business.
Alex has always enjoyed the bush and spending time in farming country, including a vacation spent putting in fences in the Murray Valley. He has always had an interest in issues affecting the land, waterways and the natural environment, and strongly supports the concepts underlying the AEF, particularly the principle that public policy should be based on evidence, not beliefs.
At a time when societies the world over face urgent and daunting issues of deforestation, degradation of water, destruction of species, diminished fisheries, polluted air and resurgent disease, Alex believes that the great majority of people are best served when focus is placed on issues that are real and immediate, rather than theoretical and long-term.
